We are proud to introduce Summer Ink’s new Camp Director, MaryKate DiPisa. An ELA teacher in middle and high school classrooms since 2010, MaryKate currently teaches 7th and 8th grade ELA at Irving Middle School in Roslindale. MaryKate is a Summer Ink veteran! Below, she recalls her time as a Senior Counselor in 2012 and shares her excitement about the upcoming summer season.
What do you remember about being a Summer Ink Senior Counselor?
I loved watching the growth and success students experienced in such a short period of time. Over-the-shoulder conferences were some of my favorite moments because it was refreshing to see students apply immediate feedback to their writing. By the end of the summer I read some of the most powerful pieces of writing!
What’s your take on how Summer Ink helps students improve their writing?
Summer Ink helps students organize their thoughts and ideas into cohesive, detailed moments. With the WEX method, students write about engaging experiences throughout the day. This emphasis on the creative aspect of writing is something students truly enjoy. The skills developed at Summer Ink transfer to all forms of writing and give students an advantage as they enter the next school year.
What do you like to do when you’re not teaching?
I love spending time with my new husband, family, and spoiling my nieces and nephews! I also hope to spend some time snorkeling this summer, and then writing about it!
What are you most looking forward to at camp this summer?
I am most looking forward to experiencing exciting activities alongside students and helping students reach their full writing potential by the summer’s end.
Tell us something about you that people wouldn’t know by looking at you.
I am super-competitive when it comes to sports. I’m looking forward to challenging and encouraging students during all of our fun summer activities!
